Controversial Muslim cleric from the Coast Region Aboud
Mohammed Rogo is dead.
Rogo was shot several times by unknown persons on mid
morning at the famous pirates beach as he was heading to hospital with his
wife, 5 yr old daughter his father in-law in their private Nissan Matatu.
According to an eyewitness the car (Nissan) was spread with
bullets several times with unknown people who were on a small car before they
drove away leaving the family of the departed preacher astonished by the
events.
The body of the preacher was buried at the Kiziwi Muslim cemetery
in Tudor area hours after he was shot dead.
Business in Mombasa Central business district came to a standstill
with businesses shut down for the better part of the day due to demonstrations
held by the followers of the preacher with several vehicles including police
vehicles burnt down and churches attacked.
Police had a hard time trying to calm the situation by
having running battles with the demonstrators with one person reported dead.
His follower s now claim that the police are responsible for
the killing and have promised to retaliate.
Rogo and a co-accused are
facing charges at a Mombasa court for plotting terror attacks on Kenyan soil. A
few weeks ago the two caused a stir at the court when they said that they had
foiled an attempt by unknown individuals to abduct and kill them.
